Do you know of a team with several high quality (non-senior) runners? If so, share your knowledge with us! (Including class if possible)

Basically, we're looking at any team with at least 5 runners that have gone under 4:40/10:10 this year, or having run under these marks at their respective state meets this fall:

Virginia State: 17:50
North Carolina State: 17:20
Tennessee State: 17:35
Georgia State: 17:25
Florida State: 16:55
South Carolina State: 16:45

or, for a team that competed at NTN last year, runners that were under 18:20.

Example: (Sorry that this is an example of the MW)

Nequa Valley IL
Chris Derrick (Jr.) 14:22 IL State, 4:19.18 1600m, 9:03.?? 3200m
Jim Riddle (Jr.) 14:45 IL State, 4:28.?? 1600m, 9:42.?? 3200m
Mike Ruff (Jr.) 15:30 IL State
Danny Pawola (So.) 15:42 IL State, 9:17.?? 3200m
Brian Morenus (So.) 15:45 IL State, 10:04.?? 3200m
Kevin Grady (Jr.) 15:59 IL State
Connor Shields (So.)- 4:29.?? 1600m, 10:00.?? 3200m
Luke Verbus (Fr.)- 10:05.?? 3200m
Bryan Winek (So.)-10:09.?? 3200m
Aaron Beatie (Fr.)- 10:09.?? 3200m

As long as there are 5 under 4:40/10:10/(the XC requirement), please share!

Thanks in advance, and please keep us up to date!

I don’t think any teams in NC meet your criteria.

Chapel Hill would be the closest - their top four (Gilland, 9:14, Marshall, 4:27, Anderson 10:04 and Sutter 4:37) all meet your standards, but they need a fifth ***EDIT(Maybe Otis Reid, who's run 10:17 for 3200)***

Among other teams, I wouldn't count Enloe or Pinecrest out - they both have a history of developing their talent. Myers Park was last year's runner up, and have four very motivated juniors returning. East Forsyth is lead by Dylan Ferris, who went 1:51/4:16 in last year's track state finals as a sophomore, and is posting similar times this season, but has yet to have a breakout xc season.

Here are the returners from the top teams and their times from last year’s 4A state meet that MIGHT rise to the occasion with some hard work and a little luck:

Chapel Hill
Gilland, Taylor SO 15:38.89
Marshall, Jack JR 16:36.02
Anderson, Peter JR 16:50.37
Sutter, Wes FR 17:48.58

East Forsyth
Ferris, Dylan JR 16:53.24
Crawford, Patrick FR 16:57.00
Castro, Gus JR 17:17.36
Kilar, Anthony SO 17:48.95
Teeter, John SO 19:02.62
Uzenski, Nate JR 19:09.19

Enloe
Graw, Nick FR 16:02.63
Carter, Nick SO 16:52.41
Kittow, John SO 17:13.78
Kijewski, Tim JR 17:36.94
Capps, Chris SO 17:42.36

Pincecrest
Baggett, Brett JR 16:50.73
Moon, Mark SO 17:08.33
Gehrung, Billy SO 17:39.61
Pittard, Bryce JR 17:52.40
Whitcar, Scott SO 18:29.86

Green Hope
Roshdy, Zak SO 17:06.55
Black, Douglas SO 17:09.92
Hrnicek, Adam JR 17:34.80
Pahle, Brian JR 17:39.27
Hoogenboom, Daniel JR 18:37.52

Myers Park
Zizzi, Andrew JR 17:09.52
Deloache, Thomas JR 17:16.35
Mayberry, Chatham JR 17:23.40
Ferree, Chase JR 17:54.78

Mooresville and Ashville both have good talent returning at the 3A level, and should probably also be included in this mix.

If I had the time, I would find times from Baylor (Chattanooga), who imported Alabama's Bill Matthews (4:21/9:24 soph) to go with what was already a stellar team.

I did not think about that, but Baylor will be loaded next year. Bringing in a probable #1 no less. They were just one guy short last year.

Yeah, they will be good. Matthews was out there cheering the guys on in the DMR the other day, too, so he looks like a team player. It appears to me as if OR and Baylor should be tough.

It also looks as if our freshman (Sharpe) who didn't run varsity at the end of the season is on the verge of a breakthrough, having gone 4:45/10:12 this week. He'll add some happiness at #5-7.

more depth for the wealthy! Good for them, if he excels in XC on that type of level, he could be enough to boost them into the top 10 nationally.

The four from Virginia that look the strongest returning right now are Midlothian, Western Albemarle, Oakton, and Jamestown. With Mountain View as probably the next in line after those 4. Figured I'd help you watchout with the track bests so far of the top returnees on those team.

Midlothian - Best 4, most experienced

Midlo is not only getting the sub 4:40 8th grader but another 8th grader that apparently broke Witt's middle school records in the 2 mile and I think XC as well. Best proven top 4 among the VA teams. Who will be the 5th remains the question.

Jason Witt (Sr) 4:23 1600, 9:15 3200, 15:59 5K
Mark Merritt (Sr) 4:25 1600, 16:33 VA State
Thomas Cole (Sr) 10:13 3200, 17:06 VA State
Michael Hammond (Sr) 4:27 1600, 17:13 VA State
Britt Hockenberry (Jr) 4:38 1600

Western Albemarle - Best 1-2-3

Best front three with the 3 of the top 5 finishers in the sophomore race at FLS (with all under 16 minutes). Still a question if they can get solid fourth and fifth men. Have a couple guys lingering in the mid 17's coming back but that does not get the job done.

Kyle Satterwhite (Jr) 4:33 1600, 9:33 3200, 16:43 VA State, 15:49 FLS
Tyler Stutzman (Jr) 4:29 1600, 9:36 3200, 16:49 VA State, 15:54 FLS
James Howard-Smith (Jr) 4:32 1600, 17:06 VA State, 15:54 FLS
Henry Loehr (Jr) 10:09 3200, 17:08 FLS

Oakton - Best depth, distance track times

Deepest team returning from VA, but their problem last year was not enough firepower up front. Lorusso is definitely a solid #1. They have the best track times out of the VA squads with four returning sub 10 guys with a few more possibly going under this spring. However, we have found that track times don't always translate into XC results and vice versa. Midlothian just got their 3rd guy under 10 minutes this past weekend and Oakton already has 6 yet Midlo manhandled them at the state xc meet.

Joe LoRusso (Sr) 4:25 1600, 9:34 3200, 16:25 VA State
Scott Maxfield (Sr) 4:31 1600, 9:52 3200
Brian Hendricks (Jr) 4:38 1600, 9:57 3200, 16:54 VA State
Chris Weil (Jr) 4:36 1600, 9:49 3200
Neal Hendricks (Jr) 4:37 1600, 10:10 3200, 17:21 VA State
Andrew McCullen (So) 4:42 1600, 10:11 3200

Jamestown - Very young, lots of upside

Lots of upside with this team since all their top returnees are currently either freshmen or sophomore. Almost looks like a middle school team with the size of some of their kids.

Andrew Colley (Jr) 4:33 1600, 9:46 3200, 16:34 VA State
John Holt (Jr) 4:36 1600, 9:56 3200, 16:50 VA State
Colin Mearns (So) 9:56 3200, 17:25 VA State
Russell Hornsby (So) 4:35 1600, 9:30 3K
Graham Slickenmeyer (So) 10:29 3200

Mountain View - Solid group

Nice to have a returning FL finalist to lead you with Porter, but they need at least 2 guys to emerge as go getters instead of run with the rest of the pack kind of guys.

Thomas Porter (Jr) 4:23 1600, 9:18 3200, 16:08 VA State, 15:13 FLS
Alex Brown (Sr) 9:54 3200, 17:26 VA State, 17:18 FLS
Chris Brown (Sr) 9:56 3200, 17:29 VA State, 17:22 FLS
Stephen Henry (Sr) 10:12 3200
Daniel Porter (Sr) 4:31 1600, 10:12 3200
Ryan Yingling (Sr) 17:06 FLS

I'll dive into the other states here later.

Jamestown looks (to me) to be the most likely to really improve, because of the relative youth of the team. They have solid track times as well as a solid season of xc under their belts from last year.

Just looking at the above, it appears to me as if Oakton should be tough because of their 2-5 scorers.

I do have to say my Baylor boys have ramped it up this Spring, with all 5 guys under 10 minutes for the deuce. Matthews just ran a solo 4:21 last night. He started with a 67 first lap and then blew apart the field. Last year I felt we had little speed but now four of them are in the mid 4:30s or faster.

Updated the Tennessee post. Any more info on your guys' PR's?

Glad to see somethings never change... what's your criteria for runners at the Maryland State Championships? Maryland is still in the SE NTN region right? Last year Quince Orchard HS finished 4th in the SE NTN rankings - they were undefeated last year. They should be strong in the fall as they return the bulk of the team.

Midlo:
Cole has lowered his 3200m to 9:53
Hammond lowered his 1600m to 4:17
Hockenberry lowered his 1600m to 4:34
plus the two incoming frosh and Witt and Merritt back healthy looks pretty good.

Oakton:
McCullen lowered his 3200m to 9:57

Jefferson:
Landry 4:21/9:23
Heflin 4:29/9:44
Bernstein 4:35/9:45
Gates 4:32
Galvin 4:35
plus 10:20,21,23

Would Parkview be top southeast team that's returning? I'm not from the Southeast or anything and never really followed it until recently and I'm very curious. Thanks. Also I didn't read most of the thread so sorry if it was mentioned earlier.

Right now, my current order for them (just going by 5-man averages)

1. Midlothian VA
2. Oakton VA
3. Mountain View VA
4. Thomas Jefferson VA
5. Walton GA
6. Jamestown VA
7. Parkview GA
8. Oak Ridge TN
9. Baylor TN
10. Western Albemarle VA

not sure where Chapel Hill NC will fit in, I don't have them included yet. And that's with a realistic guess as to where Western Albemarle's #5 would be.

Here's another fun look:

nope, I think he's seen enough of what I do to understand that I'm not forming any sort of VA bias... the track times are all on that first page, it'd be hard to refute.

Just like he knows that this year there is a regional meet to determine who goes, so he'll have his chance to show just how good the Tennessee teams can be this year.

Hey Watchout, I guess you used to visit relatives in VA and formed a little bias towards them, right? I mean, holy cow, how can you have 5 VA teams in your top 10 already? And it's only May! By August there'll be 9 of them...

I look for Oak Ridge to be the second best team in the Knoxville area... if Knoxville West has several transfers this summer.

Sadly i also predict some Virginia schools won't let their teams travel that much. I know of one that is on a short leash this spring. They didn't go to the Penn relays for the first time in years.

ORXCCoach
05-14-2007, 02:04 PM
Is that by their choice, or is the school limiting time away from school? I know that's an issue here. Of my xc and track kids, many have missed 6-7 days of school this year just for competition/travel. No one likes that--except for the kids!

alaska55

Its the schools of course. Adding the the regional meet is really gonna make it tough for some schools.

ORXCCoach
05-14-2007, 08:04 PM
Because the Regional comes at the tail end of our new TSSAA-mandated 3-week Dead Period following our state meet, our guys will hook up with the Knoxville TC and will be coached by someone else on meet day. Our school will have nothing at all to do with it, meaning that they won't have the chance not to sign onto the meet.

The good news is that our school is very supportive of opportunities like this, both in athletics and academics. I wonder sometimes about schools and associations that put a lockdown on kids having the chance to do neat things--like Penn Relays, or NTN, or Siemens-Westinghouse Competition, or TSA, or band contests, or whatever.
